The new Canon PowerShot SX20IS is a new super-zoom model, which was just released in mid-August of this year (2009). Being able to SX10IS successful model that has been slow in the bestseller charts for some time.

One of the new features Canon PowerShot SX20IS was discovered that the 720p HD video recording. This model uses a 28-50mm wide angle lens has a 20x optical zoom. Zoom can be used to recordVideo. It also has a 12.1MP image sensor, and since most of the new Canon models, uses a DIGIC 4 processor, which produces images of excellent quality.

Canon PowerShot SX20IS first glance may seem a bit 'on cumbersome, but it is really surprising and pleasant to the touch. It has a good grip, comfortable and feels very sturdy. If your hands too weak to even hold the camera and press the button, then it might work. But that's another story. This extension of the PowerShot series is the first list in 2008, so that other digital devicesCameras with big names like Sony, Nikon, Kodak, Canon and even the way behind.

Canon PowerShot SD890IS 10MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom Review

Its hard to find a good point-n-shoot these days that still has a viewfinder. I couldn't find a current Canon model that I liked for under 0, so I bought this refurnished older model. It a bit heavier, but I love the 5x zoom and all the manual options.

I prefer Canon cameras because of the quick response time and the high quality lens.

Lens Error message - A.M. - Santa Rosa, CA
I guess I should have paid more attention to the bad Amazon reviews before purchasing, then Consumer Reports. As I have now seen, a Lens Error is a very common problem on these Canon Elph's. Ours did last about a year before the lens decided to stick open and fully extended. The screen just comes up with Lens Error..restart camera...but that does not work. You can't even view your pictures. What a cheap piece of junk. Won't be buying a Canon again. I'll stick to my trusty Olympus.

Will not stand the test of time. - M. Vanderbok - Lafayette, IN
This camera broke just after the year warrenty expired.
I bought this specific camera because it had a viewfinder to help on sunny days. The viewfinder was not aligned properly so if you used it to take a picture you got half a face instead of the face you had centered in the view finder window.
Also after our second vacation with the camera it stopped working in the car due to a lens error. The camera will not close and is now a brick.
I can't get any help from Cannon on the issue.

I feel that the cost spend for this camera could be better spent on another product with either better customer support or a better design that would not break as easily.

We were not abusive to this camera.

I did like the features on this camera and the quick response time. I thought the battery life was a huge improvement over our old digital camera. I also liked the size. But due to the flaws in view finder and how quickly it broke for no apparent reason I would not recommend. We still take our old camera on the same vacations and it is still kicking while this new more expensive model is toast.

Also the color quality left something to be desired - blown out whites.

It was good in low light conditions - for restraunt parties etc.

Do not buy this camera - Roberto -
In April 2008, I purchased an SD890IS from Amazon for my wife because she prefers a camera with a viewfinder for bright shooting situations when it's difficult to view the LCD screen image. She quickly learned to use the camera's features and the photo quality was excellent. In September 2009, the lens locked in extended position and there was a grinding noise when trying to retract it. A local camera shop recommended that due to the cost of repair, it would be wiser to replace the camera. We didn't contact Amazon because we'd owned the camera 1 1/2 years.
We thought the breakdown was a fluke. Since my wife liked the camera, we decided to order another SD890IS in October 2009. In January 2010, the camera started making the same grinding noise as the preceding one and the lens malfunctioned. At that time we were in Arizona and did not return home until April 2010. Upon returning home, we returned both cameras to Amazon with a detailed explanation. They simply returned both cameras to us. Obviously customer satisfaction is not a priority to them.
Coincidentally, while we were in Arizona, a friend went to China with her new Canon PowerShot, a different model than my wife's. On her first day there, her camera started making grinding noises and the lens stuck in the open position.
We now own approximately 0 worth of broken cameras which are going into the garbage. There's nothing like throwing away money!
If you are thinking about buying this or any PowerShot, I suggest you read all the one and two star reviews and check out reviews and comments about this product on other web sites.
If this review stops one person from buying this camera, it has done its job.

Buy lots of batteries or a different camera - M. Trout - Mt Gretna, PA , USA
We purchased this camera over a year ago. Since then I have missed many pictures due to low batteries. We have tried all different brands of batteries with the same results. We thought maybe we could use AA rechargeable batteries but the instructions state not to use this type of battery. When they first start to die, it takes FOREVER for the camera to write the picture to the card, therefore you miss the next shot because you are waiting for the camera to reset. It is not good in low light, therefore you need to use the flash more often, making the battery life even worse! We took the camera to a 1 hour children's breakfast with a fresh set of batteries and by the end of breakfast had a low battery warning. I decided to write this review, because after 1 year of owning this camera, I am back at amazon looking for another point and shoot. I am embarrassed to see how much I paid for this! I could have bought a Canon G series for this price (the G series size is not all that much bigger)! I own a Canon G2 and it is one of the best cameras I have ever owned.

Things I liked:
- Video mode takes nice videos for computer use (youtube, facebook etc.) I am not sure how they look on a regular TV.
- Canon menus and settings are easy to understand. I own or have owned at least 5 Canon cameras.
- Had problems with other Canon cameras and the power switch being too easy to accidentally turn on the camera. Not a problem with this one.

Things I did not like:
- Battery life is terrible. I did not have this problem with the canons that use dedicated rechargeable batteries.
- poor in low light. Did not notice that IS made the low light pics any better. Have to use flash almost always.
- Slow to reset, especially as battery gets low
- Slow to focus, especially as battery gets low
- Plastic feels cheap and shows signs of cracking and wear after 1 year of use
- Price. You can get lots more for your money.

Excellent camera - BG -
We bought it as a gift and she love it. We try it at home and took some close up pics and they were GREAT! Colors and details are amazing!

Nice Camera But Slow - Neil D. - North Pole, AK United States
This is a very nice camera with a decent zoom and pretty easy to use features but it is S-L-O-W. Next picture delay is several seconds in excellent lighting situations, and flash recovery time is agonizingly slow. And that is with brand-new Ultimate Lithium batteries and using aData 16GB Class 6 flash memory which has been formatted in the camera. It goes downhill from there. I bought this camera based on a good CR review and regret my decision. I was seeking a good quality point-and-shoot camera with a better than 3X zoom and have always respected Canon products, but this camera is a major disappointment. When it does take a picture though, it is usually a good high-quality image. In retrospect, I would give up the zoom to get greatly improved next picture performance.

Check Out Canon PowerShot SX20IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch Articulating LCD

Canon PowerShot SX20IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch Articulating LCD Review

I'll emphasize one point first - the same that I did with the SX10 - this is NOT a camera for the rank amateur or for someone who thinks that "point and shoot" applies to this camera. You can point it, and you can shoot, but if all you're ever going to do is use it in the "Auto" setting, you're wasting your money. This is such a versatile camera that using it on "Automatic" will get you average pictures. Of course, for some people, "average" is better than you've done in the past, so...

I've had the SX10IS for almost a year, and have shot well over 10,000 photos. The SX20 has some improvements, and I thought it was worth the price to make life a little easier. In the past week, I've shot over 1,000 pictures with the SX20. All of these have been of birds, bugs, butterflies, bunnies, bees, scenery, and a few dogs. It's what I do. People aren't half as interesting. I leave those to my brother who has a Nikon Something-or-other and 30 pounds of lenses and junk that I no longer want to carry around. I will take pictures of my grandkids, but they're just that, snapshots. When I take pictures of wildlife with the SX10 or 20, it's photography, a hobby I've had for 65 years.

Comparison with the SX10 and an Evaluation: Some things become apparent immediately on the plus side: (1) the wheel on the back is easier to use, faster, and more precise. So far, it doesn't change settings just by brushing up against clothing. (2) the viewfinder adjustment is more precise and spot on. (3) It is easy to use although the instruction manual has not improved. I urge anyone using the SX10 or 20 to read the manual. (4) The weight is fine and, even though I have a relatively small hand, it is comfortable and not at all bulky. Others must be comparing this to the Elph. That said, after four hours of shooting, even 18 ounces can feel like 8 pounds around your neck. I suggest, while keeping the camera around your neck, you lift it with one hand for a little while before it becomes a literal pain in the neck. (5) Battery life is still great. I do wish that Canon had added an ACCESSIBLE battery meter so that I could tell how much batter life I have left when I leave with a camera. Then I would know before I leave home whether or not to take an extra set with me which I now do as a matter of course since I never know when they'll die. The battery warning indicator leaves you with four or five photos that can be taken if that. Odd though it may seem, I chose the SX20 over the competition because it takes AA rechargeable batteries. While those may add a little weight, it's rare that I can't find regular AAs in a store, and I can always keep an extra set in the car if I happen to be driving to a location.

What has not changed: (1) The camera is simply not made for low light situations, no matter what settings you use. "Low light" for me is a bird under the canopy of a tree even on a bright summer day. (2) The ISO has changed so that even at 80, you'll experience noise, This is worse than the SX10. At 800 and above, the noise is simply unacceptable. I keep the ISO at 200 or 100, and shoot almost exclusively at Av, Tv, or M. (3) I NEVER use digital zoom. If a bird is off some 200 feet, using the digital zoom may get you the bird, but it will be blurred no matter what the linear bar says. (4) Canon hasn't attached a cord to the lens cap since the S3 or S5, and I wish they'd bring it back. I USE the lens cap, and would prefer not keeping it in my pocket or even my hand while shooting. (5) I haven't found much use for the lens hood, and often feel that Canon added it to make the camera look "more professional" for those who feel inferior next to those using 1000mm lenses and carry 35 pounds of gear. (6) The SX20 is just as slow as the SX10, and that's fairly slow. "Continuous" is not like having a motor drive, and if you can get three shots off in 5 seconds you'd be doing very well. Birds, however, do not move for your convenience and three shots in a second would satisfy my needs. This does not. Even taking pictures of a kid running the bases is going to be missing something no matter what setting you use. Fortunately, I have the philosophy that what I miss today, I might get tomorrow. That does not apply to children at play although it might at Aunt Martha's 95th birthday party where nothing is going to move that fast.

The SX10 has the same buttons on the back, but I always seemed to be pushing them by mistake. That, for some reason, hasn't happened with the thousand photos I've taken with the SX20. And I reiterate, the thumb wheel on the SX20 is much faster and precise. I can set the exposure - speed and aperture and even override the normal settings - in half the time as with the SX10.

The macro settings on the SX20 became much easier and faster, though SuperMacro is just a pain to use. Supermacro must in my opinion be used with the LCD. You won't do much with the viewfinder at a distance of 5mm. It works, however. I rarely use it except for very small insects, but I imagine if you have a coin or stamp collection, it could come in handy although lighting will always be a problem at that (lack of) distance. Otherwise, I like the macro because the zoom works well with it. Of all the features that takes practice, it is the macro.

This is my fifth digital camera going back to 2000. Four of the five have been Canons and, if I didn't need the focal length for what I do (nature photography of everything from raptors to dragonflies), I would have stopped at the A620, perhaps the finest all-round P&S camera Canon has made. But, if you want to take a photo of a dragonfly or bird and can get within 15 feet of it, this is the camera for you...unless you like changing lenses, calculating for various conditions, and carrying all that stuff around with you.

What I fear most is that, having now bought the SX20 is that Canon will come out with another P&S that moves us closer to DSLRs and the need to have at least two lenses. After 50 years of using SLRs, I want easy, not complex. In fact, I might have told Canon to leave off some things from the SX20. I don't need fancy. I need accuracy and clarity. And I don't need automatic features with 30 different scenes. Because there's so many extras, superfluous extras added to the SX10 and 20, I can't say that the controls and menus are easy. Knowledge makes things easier, but the best knowledge is knowing what works and what you can do without. I use perhaps 40% of the functions of the camera.

Oh, before I forget, the date stamp would have been very nice if the print was smaller and if it was in the lower right corner at stated in the manual. Instead, it's about a half-inch above and to the left of the lower right hand corner, and can ruin a shot that cannot crop out the date. I would suggest leaving the date for software. Remember, once you use the date stamp on a photo, it can't be undone. I emphasize that you set the Date Stamp to "No."

The LCD is still a great plus. There have been many times when I need it to "see" over a wire fence and the only way is with this articulating LCD. Other than those circumstances, I exclusively use the viewfinder, The LCD is primarily to see what I hope will be clear when I download to my computer.

I'll repeat something else I said about the SX10: The Viewfinder on this camera is the best I've ever had! It can be set by use of a knurled ring on the left and, if you wear glasses, can make the picture you see through the viewfinder sharper than if you used glasses alone. It's five times better than using the LCD. For the viewfinder alone, I would buy this camera!

I know that many people have bought this because you can now shoot HD movies. I used the SX10 for movies twice, and probably won't do much with the SX20 in this regard either. Even with an 8GB card, a movie of a green heron chick catching a dragonfly in midair can take 6-8 minutes, and that's a lot of MBs in the process. However, if it's your son or daughter running the bases, it's great! It is possible to take one frame out for printing, but the resolution and size will be smaller than a "normal" shot. Still, this camera is capable of an awful lot, and you might as well use it.

All and all, I almost love this camera. If it were faster and could shoot in low light on a foggy day, I would love it. Overall, 4 to 4½ stars. Considering that I've published as many with the SX10 and 20 as with my 35mm SLR, I'd say that my patience and the digital point-and-shoot have improved mightily.

I compared this camera to four others (Olympus, Panasonic, Sony, and Canon), and I still ended up with the Canon SX20. The fact that they went to 12.1 MP means very little. The two extra MP doesn't make much difference, and they kept the 20X focal length of the zoom. However, I used the 24X zoom of a competitor, and there was so much noise at the upper end that I thought it was digital rather than optical. This camera was also more comfortable, albeit a little heavier, and I am really partial to AA batteries. It certainly is something to consider. (See my review of Eneloop batteries.)

I rarely recommend anything to anybody. If I recommend something as "sophisticated" as this to someone who points and shoots and still cuts off heads and feet, then I'm to blame. If someone buys the camera because s/he sees what I can do with it, they often forget that I've been a semi-pro for almost 50 years and have had a 35mm since 1953. Would I recommend THIS camera? Yes, but with several caveats which will soon be forgotten.

Postscript: For a number of very good reasons, I will not upload photos taken with this camera. All of my photos can be found on my Web site.

Check Out Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom for $329.99

Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom Review

This is a great camera! Once you spend a bit of time with the manual, it is quite easy to use. I was rather hesitant to buy this camera because of the bad reviews I read, but I am so glad I decided to get it anyway. The 20x zoom is amazing, and the macro ability is equally impressive. It takes clear, focused close-ups, even if the subject is touching the lens! Another great feature of this camera is the amount of control it allows you to have over the settings. It is very helpful to be able to adjust the white balance, shutter speed, and aperture while shooting. It also has many, many other settings that allow you to have full control over your images. Although I haven't used the video feature much, it seems alright. Of course it's videos aren't as good as those of a proper camcorder, but it still takes clear enough videos to record some good memories.
Overall, this is a fantastic camera! As far as cons go, there isn't a lot. The only thing I can think of, is the time you must spend with the manual. I'd say it takes a good couple of hours with the manual to get an idea of how to use the features. Even after you've studied the manual for a while, keep it around for future reference. I don't like reading manuals myself, but the amazing photos this camera can take, really make the two hours worthwhile. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for a high performance camera, without spending lots of money on a DSLR.

Love, Love, Love this camera - book junkie - on my gazebo
This is a sweet little camera. So many excellent features for a small, priced right camera. I bought it for a vacation trip since I didn't want to lug my heavier, complicated Nikon D80. I wanted a simple no brain point and shoot. The SX10IS is everything and more. I took well over 2500 images with good results and really no problems. From the plane looking down into the Rocky Mtns, to a moving Amtrak train, to a sailing ship, 99% of images were usable with the exception of a few operator errors...read.... I need a head for that body.... I was able to take photo still shots while filming and so much more, I was able to slowly zoom in while filming. Did I mention the Macro and super Macro yet?? The camera is very easy to operate, I didn't really need to read the manual, just kept figuring it out through the controls no complications there. Are the photos as clear as the Nikons? Possibly not, but the price difference is large and the fact that one lense will do just about everything far outweigh those factors. The biggest problem is learning the software program for the computer, which I think I may have to uninstall and reload, other than that I absolutely love this camera and I think it will remain a Canon classic for years to come.

Great Camera - R. Brunk -
I have used SLR's to subcompacts and this is the best compromise of features and convenience I have experienced. I was frustrated that the little pocket digitals would take out of focus pictures so frequently, and the larger SLR's were just not convenient for many circumstances. With this camera, you can have confidence that you will not miss the shot. The Image Stabilizer works great on the long zoom shots, and the auto focus keeps the pictures sharp. The built in 20x zoom gets you in close if needed, without having to lug that lens bag around. The swivel LCD monitor is great, I have held the camera over my head in crowds a bunch, and gotten good shots while everyone peering through their SLR viewfinder, or squinting at the tiny screen painted on the back of their subcompacts were missing the action. If you want to customize your shot, there are a slew of options you can access. Can't explain the few negative reviews, other than read the manual and pay attention to the settings. Great Camera.

Point and Shoot - results are awesome! - HoneybeeNC - Charlotte, NC USA
You don't have to read the manual to use this camera for the first time, just remove it from the box, set on auto, point it at something and press the button. The photos this camera produces are awesome! I purchased this camera last July and am still learning new things about it.

Decent video, unreliable everything - Mike -
I've had this camera for several months now and it's been back for warranty repairs twice. First for the screen going dead, second for the lens retraction mechanism failing. Those were both fixed under warranty with little hassle aside from lost time. The frustrating thing about this camera is the unreliable file system that it uses. Multiple times the camera has taken it upon itself to completely erase the SD card when trying to take a picture or movie. Today it erased an entire day's worth of movies and photos (including my son's first bike ride) and only kept the last few movies recorded.
Also, unless the camera is set in completely manual mode it is too slow to auto-set while taking photos. It can take up to a couple seconds from button press to image capture.
The image quality is only so-so unless the photo is taken in bright light (outdoors in sunlight). Even normal indoor room lighting results in noisy images unless the flash is used.

Canon Power shot SX1101S - Mark A. Rhoads -
I love my canon, however the zoom leave some to be desired. A fantastic point and shoot.

Check Out Canon PowerShot SX100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver) for $318.13

Canon PowerShot SX100IS 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver) Review

Please let me first explain that I'm not in like manner, a digital photo freak.
Four years ago I used to run around with a much smaller (and simple) Canon digital camera (PowerShot A560 - 7.1 mp) but when I read about Canon's SX100IS and checked out its features, immediately fell in love with it!

I've been using it continuously for almost two years, never had a failure or a "lens error" message. Since I started to use this camera, I loaded it with a 8 GB SDHC card and took all my pictures in the Auto mode with excellent results. I paid 0 for the camera, the SDHC card and carrying case (including taxes, because I live out of the U.S.) but I think I got a good price anyway!

The photo quality is REALLY GOOD for a camera with such lens size (and price level). The 10X optical zoom feature is A MUST for close-up shots!!!
Even open range and skyline photos (sunsets at the beach) were taken, with an awesome image definition!!!

However, it's true that battery life is quite short, so don't forget to carry an 8-pack of fresh AA batteries everytime (specially, if you're planning a long trip with plenty of photo shooting).

I really don't know if newer Canon models for this camera may have a better performance, even with larger megapixel capability. Really, I'm quite happy with this camera, and I would consider to change it only if I find a much better model in a really cheap price. Thank you Canon!

Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Canon Powershot SX10IS 10MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom Review

I got this camera for Christmas last year, so I have a year of experiences and thoughts to share... nonetheless, I'll try to make it worth your time!

First off, I recently read another post that said "All choices of cameras and lenses are compromises, involving size, ease of use, cost, weight, lens quality, and more," and I need to say I couldn't agree more. If you're looking for DSLR quality images (due to the larger sensor size) or super-fast burst rate for shooting sports, or even great low-light performance, this camera will provide you with basic functionality but leave you always looking up-market (and wishing you had the cash to satisfy your desire!). Alternatively, if you're looking for a great little camera that takes terrific shots and which you will always have with you because it's easy to carry around and fits in your back pocket, this camera will have you gazing admiringly at the never-ending onslaught of point-and-shoot ads coming your way. So, you need to recognize that whichever camera you buy, you're making a compromise, because camera manufacturers have not yet figured out how to make a DSLR-quality camera that slips easily into your pocket or purse.

Why choose the SX10IS then? I'd say start with this premise: great photos are more a function of the photographer (and his/her use of composition, use of light, and editing software!) than the technology at his disposal. I've taken some great - really interesting - shots with my iPhone because the opportunities presented themselves and that was the only camera I had available. But having taken those shots and been encouraged by them, I wanted to explore what I might be able to do with a more powerful camera at my disposal. The SX10IS has been that camera.

As a novice, the most amazing features of the camera will be the 20X zoom and the image stabilization. I've taken photos of my wife and son at least 100 yards away at the top of a sled run, on full zoom, where their faces came out clear as a bell. I'm told this used to be absolutely unheard of without a tripod. Similarly, I've taken some beautiful panoramic pacific ocean sunsets and then zoomed in from a mile away on a fishing boat where I can see the fisherman working on pulling up his net in profile - all while sitting in the exact same spot! Absolutley amazing stuff... never discount the power of image stabilization for improving your pictures, especially if you've suffered from blurred photos in the past, as I have.

Some other thoughts: this camera has just about all of the manual settings you'll get on a DSLR, so if you want the opportunity to grow and learn, this will allow you to do so, at a fraction of the cost. Also, the pre-set "scene" modes should not be overlooked. I was trying to take pictures of my son's soccer games on Auto mode and not real happy with them, when I remembered the "Sports" mode on the dial. I switched the dial, and suddently I was able to catch the action with the players in mid-stride and the ball frozen mid-air, just like the pros (well, not "just like" but pretty good, given I didn't have the super-fast burst mode they do).

I will say that the user manual is a pain to follow, which has slowed my progress in learning the manual features.

All in all, I have to give this camera two thumbs up: it met my needs for cost (got it for only 5, with free shipping and no sales tax!), while feeding my desire to learn more and improve my photographic skills. Do I still wish I could get Canon 40D-type quality and specs in the body of a Canon S90? The answer is a definitive Yes (the Canon G11 might be the another great compromise, like the SX10), but short of carrying around multiple cameras, the SX10 is definitely a camera that can be recommended.

Happy shopping and happy shooting!

Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels at 30 fps) movie mode plus HDMI output for easy playback of video and photos on your HDTV.If you long for the convenience of an advanced still camera that also creates superb movies, the new PowerShot SX1 IS was developed with you in mind. The first PowerShot camera to feature a 10.0 Megapixel Canon CMOS sensor for superb image quality.Canon's proprietary CMOS sensors were formerly reserved for its storied EOS line. The PowerShot SX1 IS is the first PowerShot that gives you access to the astonishing imaging power of this technology. Unlike the CCD sensors on most digital cameras, CMOS sensors convert and amplify signals before they are transferred to the image processor. This enables the CMOS sensor to produce exceptionally clean image data, free of the stray signals that can mar images. The resulting images show a notable brilliance and clarity. 28mm wide-angle 20x Optical Zoom lens with Optical Image Stabilizer. The PowerShot SX1 IS features Canon's precision 28mm wide-angle lens that allows you to shoot any scene from wide-angle to telephoto. It lets you capture more in every frame, so everyone fits in a family gathering shot. When it's time to take a closer look, a 20x optical zoom (35mm film equivalent 28-560mm) greatly minimizes camera shake and maximizes the brilliance of every detail. The camera uses a USM (Ultrasonic Motor) for high-speed, quiet, energy-efficient lens movement with precise control. Focal length is conveniently indicated on the lens barrel.

Canon PowerShot SX120IS 10MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Images Stabilized Zoom and 3-inch LCD

Canon PowerShot SX120IS 10MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Images Stabilized Zoom and 3-inch LCD Review

I was looking for the best zoom with image-stabilization in the under-0 category and I'm pretty sure I've found it. In addition, I got what seems to be the smartest camera in its class. Unfortunately, the people who designed it were thinking more about getting the images onto the camera than getting the images off. It doesn't mount as a USB mass-storage device and the bundled software is total "poo." It's a good camera, but save yourself a headache and get a card reader if you don't have one already.

I paid about less than Amazon's price for this camera, which put it in the same price range as a typical 3x-zoom pocket Panasonic, Pentax or Kodak camera, but IMHO it's better than any of those and way better than the Olympus cameras I've tried that cost more. Some of those other cameras will be 12-megapixels while this one's a "mere" 10MP, but don't buy into the megapixel myth.

*_Pros:
10x optical zoom for the price of a 3x zoom camera. The image-stabilization makes it a snap to get great pics while zoomed to the max.

Picture quality is very nice. With decent lighting there's little noise, banding or color-shifting, even at the edges of the images where other cameras tend to sneak it in. Indoors, in Auto mode there's some fine noise in the red and green channels that's easily detectable, but about on-par with cameras in this price-range.

The Auto setting gets you shooting high quality pictures in a hurry. About 2 seconds from power-on to the first shot.

If, like me, you love to fiddle, this thing offers lots of manual settings. ISO, WB, manual focus, aperture control, custom exposure time up to 15 seconds... The Manual settings are especially useful for indoor and macro shots.

People complain about the camera eating batteries. The cheap batteries that it came with were depleted before I'd finished reviewing the controls, but with Energizer Titaniums I easily got at least 250 shots -- some with flash -- before the batteries ran down. I haven't tried Lithium yet.

The little battery used just for keeping time. Sometimes I leave my camera shelved for a month or two and with previous cameras I'd have to set the time and date and other presets all over again. This camera: No pain.

Duplicating images and some tweaking including red-eye correction can done be while browsing images in Playback mode instead of at the time of the shot.

The camera can be set to display detailed image data including a histogram when a picture is displayed at the time that it's shot and also later in the Preview mode.

Pop-up flash with fine flash controls.

Uses standard AA batteries. No proprietary charger to deal with.

I honestly don't know that the auto face recognition does anything to improve my picture-taking, but it's fun to play with when you've got lots of people in a shot and the time to fuss around.

...

*_Cons:
While the manual says that the camera's memory card will mount on a Mac or PC using the supplied USB cable, I've found that it simply doesn't work and a little Googling confirmed that this is an epic fail for almost all Canon cameras. The camera is detected on the USB bus, but it's never mounted as a mass-storage device. I've got a card reader so it isn't a big deal, but it's annoying. Notably, if you lack a card-reader and if you've got a Mac, Apple's Image Capture software -- bundled with the OS -- detects the camera and lets you copy the images anywhere on your drive quite efficiently. This is in contrast to...

The "Camera Window" software that Canon wants you to use to get images and movies off of the memory card is one of the most stupid inefficient pieces of crud ever to pollute my computer. It has almost no configurable options, shows thumbnails but doesn't allow a user to simply drag and drop images to the Desktop or to a convenient folder and forces the user to import the images into an awful awful awful proprietary image-catalog application. Whoever decided to push this lousy software on us deserves to be tarred and feathered and publicly flogged. I just want the memory card on my camera to mount on my computer so that I can copy my pictures to wherever the heck I want and decide for myself how I want my images cataloged. Almost every digital camera did that 10 years ago. Why is it so hard for modern camera-makers to do this?!!

WB suffers a lot indoors when using the Auto mode without the flash.

The camera's display tends to make images look brighter and more saturated than they actually are. Plan accordingly.

Continuous shooting has a delay of about a second between shots. It should be faster.

When shooting video, the WB and ISO seem to be stuck at whatever setting they are at when the camera starts recording so moving from a bright room to a darker room makes for color-shifts and noise.

Also when shooting video, the optical zoom is stuck at whatever setting you had when you started recording. You can't zoom out from there and zooming in from that point is digital-only and adds noise.

...

*_Nit-Picking:
The plastic case makes it seem like this camera is low-end when it just ain't.

The battery compartment can be hard to open. There should be some grooves in the battery-door to help you get the traction to slide the door out to the position where it swings open. I've found a trick to doing it with minimal effort: Move the little button with your fingernail, then keep your fingernail in the slot and push with the edge of your nail towards the side of the camera to slide the battery-door out to the point where it can swing open.

Movies are shot in a 4:3 aspect ratio (640x480, AVI, MJPEG compression with raw 8-bit/11KHz mono audio). They are generally of excellent quality -- good enough to stand in for a camcorder in a pinch -- but modern devices should shoot in 16:9 instead of 4:3. Oddly, VLC reports encoding errors in the movie files, but QuickTime 7 has no problem with them.

It's not really big or heavy, but this is not a camera that can easily fit in a pants-pocket. It does fit in the inside pocket on some of my coats. I actually went out and got a little camera case with a belt-loop and shoulder-strap for mine so I don't have to worry about it dangling from my wrist when I'm not using it.

The big white wrist strap that mine came with is ugly. I replaced it with a svelte gray strap from another camera.

The PhotoStitch software that it comes with crashes instantly under Mac OS 10.5 and 10.6. I didn't buy it for the cheezy software, but if you want to make panaramas be warned.

The images are saved at 180dpi. I've noticed this with other Canon cameras. I can see a rationale for 72 dpi. I can see 96 or 244 or 300dpi. Why 180dpi? I know that it's arbitrary and largely meaningless, but that number is just weird.

I wish this camera would save pictures in LZW TIFF or RAW format. I hate JPEG.

...

Okay, so you've read this far and you see lots of criticisms. I still recommend this camera. It takes good pictures, it's got a great zoom with some of the best image-stabilization I've seen and the interface is suitable for both the neophyte and the advanced amateur user. It's a sweet camera and the price is fantastic for what you get. If you want better, you're going to end up paying a lot more.

Canon PowerShot SD960IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.8-inch LCD (Light Blue) Review

this camera is great so far! i have had it for a couple of months now. i wanted a very small camera with all of the features that could be crammed in. my previous 3 cameras were olympus. i checked product reviews for about 4 months before i decided. i do suggest going to canon's website and checking the reviews there. i found another cannon that initially had a product feature of "underwater", but when i went on cannon's website, i found that that feature did not exist on the camera i was checking out. their features had initially listed it incorrectly and then corrected it on the cannon website.

Canon PowerShot SX200IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-inch LCD (Red)

Canon PowerShot SX200IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-inch LCD (Red) Review

Although splendid, this was originally ordered as a birthday gift for my daughter who constantly travels. However, she said it was more suitable for experienced photographers. It is very bulky and designed to fit on a tripod. I ordered the Canon 990 instead because much easier to use for inexperienced photographers and it is made of a narrower compact size that could easily fit into her handbag and she absolutely loves it.
